CFD-VisCART 'Save Image' feature

As in CFD-VIEW, CFD-VisCART has a 'Save image' feature that allows you to save snapshots of your model. If you are interested in this tip, please read on.

The  CFD-VisCART Save Image feature allows you to save snapshots/images of the active viewer in various formats, namely *.RGB, *.GIF, *.BMP, *.PPM, *.PS, and *.XMP.

This option is available under 'File Save Image' as shown in figure 1. Alternatively, this can also be found on the Toolbar as shown in figure 2.

The image can be saved in two different modes: From Area and From Window.

Selecting the option 'File Save Image From Area' enables you to save a specific area of the active 3D viewer window to a new image file.

On the other hand, the option 'File Save Image From Window' allows you to save the entire 3D viewer window as a new image file.

The path you select to save the image will be registered as the default directory path for the next image capture within the current CFD-VisCART session.

It is worthwhile to mention that if you choose the 'Save Image' option directly from the Toolbar, an image of the entire graphics area will be saved (an area cannot be specified).

Steps to save an Image Area:

  1. To save an area of the graphics window, select the 'Save Image From Area' option under the File menu.
  2. Once selected, you will switch to Lasso mode: click and drag the cursor to encompass the area you wish to save as an image (see figure 3 below).
  3. Once the area is selected, the Save Area Image dialog will pop-up. Enter the name and the image format for the file and click OK.

The steps to save the entire graphics area are very similar to saving a particular area. Simply select the 'Save Image From Window' option, enter the name and format for the image file, and click OK to save it.

Visual Display of Bad Cells in CFD-VisCART

Most models have certain parts or regions where the grid density needs to be higher than other areas to accommodate for steep curvatures, sharply changing topology, etc.

Grid Quality Checks in CFD-VisCART

CFD-VisCART is an automated 3D unstructured adaptive Cartesian grid generation tool for handling complex geometries. The grid generation process is considered the most serious bottleneck in CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis. The most demanding part in the process is handling the complex geometries, and the generation of suitable computational grids.

New Tools in CFD-VisCART v2006

CFD-VisCART is best suited for aerodynamic and automotive underhood applications involving extremely complex geometries. When generating the mesh, you might encounter negative volumes in the mesh. CFD-ACE-SOLVER is not capable of handling such meshes, and thus these deficiencies in the mesh must be removed before submitting it to the solver.

Dump Batch Script in CFD-VisCART V2009

Batch processing through scripting appeared in CFD-VisCART v2006 and this feature kept improving since then. You can see a short description in this past user tip. This can be very useful to create meshes without graphical interaction or to set up similar models over and over.

Cell Size Growth Control in CFD-VisCART

In CFD-VisCART, the Cartesian cells can split or grow by a minimum factor of 2 because of the intrinsic cartesian-cell-splitting algorithm. Due to this, in some cases, there is a chance that the mesh could grow from dense (at the wall) to coarse (away from the wall) within a short distance.
