Surface Projection in CFD-GEOM Print E-mail

The Project Surface tool of CFD-GEOM allows the projection of a single surface onto a collection of surfaces. The collection of surfaces may contain gaps and overlaps, and the resulting projected surface will then covers these imperfections. Furthermore, because the resulting surface is an approximation of the collection, it allows the user to cover small features which may be harmful during surface meshing.

In the example below, a surface (Surface 3) will be projected onto two disconnected surfaces (Surfaces 1 and 2), as depicted in figure 1. The general steps involved are as follows:

  1. Go to 'Geometry -> Trimmed Surface Creation Options' and select "Project Surface", as shown in Figure 2.

  2. Pick the surface(s) to be projected and click the middle mouse button. In this example, it would be Surface 3.
  3. Pick the surfaces onto which Surface 3 will be projected and click the middle mouse button. These would be Surfaces 1 and 2.
  4. Select the projection direction. In this case, Surface 3 will be projected normal to Surface 1 and 2 using the "Normal" projection option.
  5. Click "Preview" to verify that the projection is correct.
  6. Click the middle mouse or Apply button to complete the surface projection (see figure 3 below).

Semi-Structured Domain Stitching in CFD-GEOM

A feature that allows users to stitch together a Semi-Structured domain is available in CFD-GEOM.  This feature gives the user flexibility of stitching two end faces with different topologies, i.e. a geometry that cannot be extruded.

Mirroring Tools in CFD-GEOM

The mirroring tools provided in CFD-GEOM can help in the construction of symmetrical geometries or geometries involving repetitive parts. Ideally, we should take advantage of geometric symmetry to model just one-half or one-fourth of the model or even a 2D axi-symmetric model to reduce the computational time by significantly reducing the size of the model.

Exporting STL Files From CFD-GEOM

A CFD simulation process starts from an accurate representation of the boundaries that usually originates directly from CAD systems. STL and IGES are two of the most common output formats used as a starting point for mesh generation. STL (StereoLithography) files represent 3D surface geometries using a triangular mesh allowing unambiguous transfer of files from one system to another.
